Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Aromatics

  • 1 lb ground beef or ground turkey
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Sauce Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For Serving

  • 8 slices Texas toast
  • Optional: 4 slices cheddar or American cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Meat Mixture: Brown the ground beef or turkey in a large skillet over medium heat, breaking it apart as it cooks. Once fully cooked and no longer pink, drain any excess fat to avoid greasiness.
  2. Add Aromatics and Sauce Ingredients: Add the finely chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet and cook for a few minutes until softened and fragrant. Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, yellow mustard, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly and let the mixture simmer for 10 to 15 minutes until thickened to a sloppy joe consistency.
  3. Toast the Texas Toast: While the meat mixture simmers, toast the Texas toast slices. You can use a skillet with butter or bake in the oven until golden and crispy on the outside but soft inside.
  4. Assemble and Serve: Spoon generous portions of the sloppy joe filling onto each slice of Texas toast. Optionally, top with cheese slices and allow them to melt slightly before serving. Serve warm and enjoy.

Notes

  • Drain the meat well to prevent soggy sandwiches.
  • Simmer the sauce to develop richer flavor and perfect thickness.
  • Don’t skip toasting the Texas toast; its texture elevates the dish.
  • Adjust chili powder or add hot sauce gradually for desired spice level.
  • Use fresh onions and garlic for optimal flavor over substitutes.
