Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, finely minced
  • 3 green onions, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs or 1/2 cup cooked rice
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon red chili flakes or 1 fresh chili, finely chopped (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro or Thai basil, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons peanut oil or vegetable oil, for frying or baking

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients: Finely mince garlic, ginger, and green onions. Chop fresh cilantro or Thai basil leaves and measure out the spices and sauces needed for the meatball mixture.
  2. Mix the Meatball Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine ground turkey, garlic, ginger, green onions, breadcrumbs or cooked rice, egg, fish sauce, lime juice, chili flakes, and herbs. Mix gently but thoroughly to evenly distribute flavors without overworking the meat.
  3. Shape the Meatballs: With slightly wet hands, form the mixture into small, bite-sized meatballs about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter to ensure even cooking and tenderness.
  4. Cook the Meatballs: Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat and fry meatballs, turning occasionally, until golden brown and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes. Alternatively, bake on a lined sheet tray at 400°F (200°C) for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway to ensure even browning.
  5. Serve: Transfer the cooked meatballs to a serving dish. Pair with dipping sauces like sweet chili or peanut sauce, or toss into noodles or fresh salads for a complete Thai-inspired meal.

Notes

  • Don’t overmix the meat mixture to keep the meatballs tender.
  • Use fresh herbs like cilantro and Thai basil for vibrant flavor.
  • Adjust spice gradually by adding chili flakes a little at a time.
  • Avoid overcrowding the pan when frying to ensure even browning.
  • Let the meatballs rest a few minutes after cooking to meld flavors.
